Preschool

  • We promote a developmentally appropriate learning environment to foster individual skills and understanding that will enable children to make sense of the world and to succeed. We create an environment that invites children to observe, be active, and to make choices and experiment.

The Virginia Preschool Initiative (VPI) Program was established as a grant program that shall be used to provide at least half-day services for the length of the school year for at-risk three-year-old and four-year-old children who are unserved by Head Start programs and for at-risk five-year-olds who are not eligible to attend kindergarten. The services shall include quality preschool education; health services, including nutrition access programs; social services; parental involvement, including activities to promote family literacy; and transportation. A child who is age five on or before September 30 of the school year would not be eligible for the VPI l programs, as they are eligible for Kindergarten.

Parents/guardians who work for Roanoke County and reside in Roanoke County, may pay tuition for their child to  attend a Roanoke County preschool.  Children must be three on or before September 30th of the attending year.  Registration for this population is in the spring.  An email is sent to all Roanoke County employees informing them of the registration period.

If you are concerned regarding your child’s development and wish to have a child study, please contact us to make a referral.

  • Roanoke County Public Schools is proud to partner with the United Way, local school systems and preschool providers on the new Smart 2 Start program.  This program provides a one-stop-shop resource for parents to enroll their children in early care and education programs.  Smart2Start is the sole point of contact, ensuring all families have access to these early childhood resources.
