• Librarian:

    Library classes for Kindergarten through fifth grade are held on days 1, 4, 5, 6, 7, 10, 11, and 12.  PreK classes are held on days 3 and 9.

    The links to the right provide access to Green Valley library's online catalog and access to Britannica School Encyclopedia and Britannica Image Quest to all Roanoke County students.  Username and password are available from Ms. Haskins. The Destiny Catalog Parent Video shows parents how to view books new to Roanoke County Public Schools' library collection within Green Valley Elementary's library.  If you have any concerns regarding a title, please email your school librarian with the title, author, and any restrictions you would like to put in place for your child. If the 22-23 New Book list is not showing, your librarian has not recently added books.

    The Green Valley library curriculum correlates the Virginia Standards of Learning with Standards for the 21st-Century Learner developed by the American Association of School Librarians (AASL).  The library curriculum encompasses all areas of the school curriculum and seeks to incorporate the SOLs into library instruction.  The Standards for the 21st-Century Learner focus on information literacy, or the ability to access, evaluate, and use information.  This is the foundation for the Green Valley library curriculum and is the key to academic achievement and lifelong learning.  Green Valley’s library curriculum also focuses on developing a love of literature and reading.  When children are introduced to the magic within the pages of a book at a young age, they often take that with them throughout their lives.

The libraries extend and enhance the classroom experience: a place where students, teachers, and librarians can explore, learn, create, and collaborate. Librarians foster a love of reading and learning in addition to modeling and utilizing current technologies to assist students in becoming proficient and responsible users of information.

    Roanoke County Book Selection Policy

    The Roanoke County Public Schools library program has a book selection policy for our schools that supports the curriculum, incorporates current educational trends, and considers the needs, interests, and diversity of our students.

    When selecting books for purchase, school librarians consider professional reviews and recommended reading ages. Nonfiction books are selected based on accuracy, scope, reliability, format, points of interest, and potential use. Materials on opposing sides of controversial issues are purchased so that students may develop critical thinking skills. Fiction books are selected based on the needs of the collection, popularity, quality, curriculum-connections, and professional book reviews. Recommendations from students and staff members are encouraged and honored when possible.  Donated books must meet the same criteria as newly purchased books.
