I wanted to take a moment to update you on the progress of ongoing safety initiatives in our schools in partnership with the Roanoke County Police Department and Fire and Rescue.

We continue to increase the exterior security of our schools by ensuring all exterior doors are locked at all times and requiring any visitors to use the main entrance where visitors can be properly vetted before entering the school.  We also are conducting multiple safety reviews of our school facilities and have already made some adjustments to the design of the new Cave Spring High School as a result of these reviews.

As previously mentioned, we have established the school safety advisory committee.  This committee consists of parents, teachers, mental health professionals, principals and central office administrators.  The purpose of this committee is to examine ideas and suggestions and make initial recommendations to the Roanoke County School Safety Task Force.  The advisory committee held its first meeting yesterday and already the group is working to evaluate several ideas to improve the safety of our schools.

Also, we have created a new section on our website dedicated to safety and security updates.  I encourage you to use this page to stay informed about our safety efforts.   We have created a form on this page where anyone can submit ideas and suggestions for review.

You can find the safety website at

Safety is and will remain our top priority.  I appreciate the input from our community as we continue to work to make sure our schools are safe places for learning.

Thank you.
