Just In Time Tutoring, powered by Tutor.com and the Princeton Review, is a free online tutoring service provided by Roanoke County Public Schools for middle and high school students. Initially launched in mid-February, the service has been used by Roanoke County Public School students more than 2,200 times as of mid-April.
The most popular subjects are math, science and writing, with the average session length running just under twenty minutes.
“We knew when we launched Just In Time Tutoring that our students would use this for help mostly in our core subjects,” said Ben Williams, director of research and assessment for Roanoke County Public Schools. “We are seeing a surprising number of students seeking assistance with coding, which shows the versatility of this service,” said Williams.
After each session, students are asked some feedback questions. More than 94-percent of students responded that Just In Time Tutoring was helpful in completing homework assignments and is helpful in improving grades. More than 92-percent said they would recommend Just In Time Tutoring to a friend.
“When we announced Just In Time Tutoring, our goal was to level the playing field for our students by providing free on-demand tutoring services for our middle and high school services. In just two months, we’re already starting to achieve that goal,” said Dr. Ken Nicely, superintendent of Roanoke County Public Schools. “We are excited to see just how much more this service will help our students in the coming school year,” Dr. Nicely said.
The Roanoke County School Board is using some of the remaining COVID-related grant funding to provide this opportunity for secondary students through the 2024-2025 school year.

Just In Time Tutoring provides Roanoke County Public School middle and high school students immediate access to a live United States-based tutor, regardless of time or day. Tutors can provide assistance for the majority of core classes offered in Roanoke County Public Schools, including some world languages (French, Spanish and German). All tutors must pass a rigorous application process including an extensive background check. No personal information is shared, and all sessions are
recorded and available to the student for later playback as needed.
In addition to on-demand tutoring resources, students can submit any writing assignment for expert proofreading with a 12-hour turnaround time. Proofreaders will review and make suggestions on writing elements including grammar, sentence structure, theme development and more.
For those students preparing to take ACT and SAT tests, Just In Time Tutoring provides access to industry-leading Princeton Review test preparation materials – all at no cost. These services can be a significant cost to parents if purchased privately.
