Butzer steps down as school board chairman, Wray named new chairman
Don Butzer, Catawba District representative on the Roanoke County School Board, announced he is stepping down immediately as chairman of the school board. Butzer will continue to represent the Catawba District as a member of the board. Butzer was in the middle of serving his second term as chairman when he decided to step down.
“As chairman your role is to facilitate and moderate discussions between school board members in an attempt to reach consensus. The school board will be discussing and ultimately voting on the 2020-2021 Roanoke County Public School system’s reopening plan. This will be the most important decision, in my view, that any school board member has made or will ever make. If we get it wrong, it could cost lives. I need to be an active participant in that discussion, and I feel I that I could not if I were to remain as chairman. While I have stepped down as chairman, I will continue to serve on the Board for the remainder of my term which expires in 2023,” Butzer said.
The board has selected Cave Spring member, Mike Wray, as the new school board chairman. Wray was serving as the board vice-chairman for 2020. He previously served as school board chairman in 2016 and has served as chair of the Roanoke County Board of Supervisors when he represented the Cave Spring District from 2004-2008.
David Linden, Hollins District member, has been selected as the new vice chairman.
